Ben Forta - User Group Meeting

Here are some raw-data notes I took during Ben Forta’s user group meeting for ColdFusion at Michigan State last night in Lansing. You wouldn’t be interested in clicking this unless you’re a geek (or curious what a “Ben Forta” is):

Spring Cleanup (And Trash Pickers)

Spring Cleanup is here this Saturday, which means I have been busy hauling load after load of random crap out to the road. Amongst the pile of non-computer related crap I’ve added the following:

6 Computer Cases (Motherboards, parts, and enclosures need not apply)
8 Keyboards (Including the keyboard that had all the way up to an F24 key)
3 CD Rom Drives (5x speed baby!)
13 200MB to 2GB Hard Drives (Over half didn’t work)
5+ Floppy Drives (And to think I could have had both an A and B drive in my computer)
1 250MB Zip Drive (I didn’t know I even had this, oh well)
8 Monitors (Most didn’t work, some were fuzzy, others were black and white)
1 Copy Machine (Not pictured, it weighed at least 150 pounds)
4 Power Supplies (Not including those in the cases)
30+ Chips of old-school RAM (The biggest may have been 1MB)

Between trips I noticed a SUV pull up and yank some parts. I’m not sure what they grabbed but I’m pretty sure it didn’t work. =)

Merry Christmas

I would just like to say: Merry Christmas to everyone!

Website Updates:
I’ve posted a new version of Switch Board on the Projects Page. I’ve so far developed two version in the last few days. The first one was a re-write of the Classic Switch Board using a .htaccess file to route pages through one file for security and url display purposes (2.0.0). The second version adds additional authentication features to limit users who are not logged in based on a session variable from viewing internal pages.

Wireless Network

WRT54GLI purchased a Linksys-Cisco WRT54GL from amazon.com. This router is pretty good, it has excellent options and good output distance. I needed to go from the house to the shop (~100 feet). The signal does a good job going through two foundation walls and through the outdoors.

TRENDnet 54Mbps 802.11G AdapterThis gives a Low-Good signal on my laptop, however, it does not work well with the network cards I purchased. In the shop it was getting No Signal to Very-Low. To the computers in my room, I get a Low-Good, ~75% Signal Strength, ~%90 Link Quality (so there is no problem there). There must be some interference or something near/in the shop.

802.11G 54MBPS USB 2.0 AdapterI was at the mall today and went into radio shack just to check out if they had any cheap name brand (Linksys) cards that might get a better signal. They had a USB connector with a -$40 instant rebate for $20! So I purchased it, installed it, and the shop is now getting Low-Good signal.

Now all I need is to call Charter, w00t,
Daniel Slaughter

Burget Buckets

Burger Buckets LogoAt the beginning of the school year I had to create a VXML script that allowed people to communicate over a phone with a “pretend” operator. [Prototype1]

This time around we had to make it into a webpage (we could have used other languages, but html was my option of choice). He showed us an example of what he wanted, so I pretty much made that (it’s ugly). Mine is written in HTML and JavaScript. I used PHP to display the content posted to the confirmation page, I’m sure I could do that with JavaScript if I looked hard enough, but I’d rather it just work. [Prototype2]

Application PHP

I added my first attempt at Application PHP to the Projects page. Give me feedback if you think it’s the sweetest thing ever. I plan on adding additional features over christmas break.

Dreamhost: resolved

The response I got (which I assumed):

“Hello Daniel, The reason it charged you as soon as you made the change is because when you change the billing cycle or selected plan, the changes reset the cycle and the effects are immediate. I’ll go ahead and wipe out the $70.01 that is owed on the account, as this was simply an honest mistake. If there’s anything else I can help you with, please let me know! Thanks! Christian”

The good news is that I do not have to pay $70.01, thank you Dreahost. w00t!

Dreamhost

I logged into Dreahost today to register thewlbl.com through them for hosting (my current host is about to expire). So, while I was in there I started playing in the account settings page. I went to the page that shows me how much my billing cycles are because I was curious what it would cost me next year. I changed the term from 1 year to 2 years because they said I would get 20% off. After changing it, it billed me $140, so I changed it back. It now says I owe them $70 (even though I’m paid in full). I’ve sent them an email and I am waiting for their response.

Wish me good luck,
Daniel Slaughter
